Ubuntu Living Lab (ULL) emerged from the rich legacy of community activism and development work in the Phatheni area. Born under the custodianship of the Chobozumhlanga Cooperative, ULL represents a new paradigm in community-led development.
Our name reflects our core philosophy: "Ubuntu" - the African concept of shared humanity, and "Living Lab" - framing our community as a dynamic ecosystem for innovation where challenges are met with collective wisdom and shared resources.
We believe that villages like Phatheni are not deficient, but are rich with latent potential, wisdom, and creativity that have been marginalized by dominant narratives of rurality. ULL exists to unlock this potential through practical, community-owned initiatives.
Our Mission
To establish community-owned cooperatives that function as dynamic interfaces between residents and the state, co-designing and implementing grassroots solutions that address local needs while advancing development priorities through the principles of Ubuntu.
Our Vision
A network of thriving, self-reliant South African communities where robust community-government partnership fosters sustainable development and shared prosperity for all, rooted in the wisdom of Ubuntu.
